But by the late 90s, Giuliani’s cabaret license raids, finance bros, and NYU trust-funders defiled the clubs to the Kardashified, bottle-service horror show now seen everywhere.
In their eagerness for safety and comfort, the athleisured crowds of today now celebrate the generic. The tragedy of modern nightlife is not that it is decadent, but that it is dull. The revival will require ditching surveilling phones and reviving door policies where only beauty, style, and creativity get you in.
